“And when a violent attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to abuse and stone them, they became aware of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region. And they were preaching the gospel there.” Acts 14:5-7
Here is a comment I wrote on the above scripture. I thought it was apropos to the current social/political climate in America.
violent attempt – Always it came down to violence. Those who opposed the gospel could not prevail by reason because reason pointed to Christ. It shows that Christianity’s opponents are never truly concerned with the truth, no matter how they pretend. In the end, after all the arguments have been put forth, their only recourse, is violence. (Note: This explains why Muslim expansion has always relied on violence as well. They cannot convince by reason so they expand by force and threat of violence.)
There is a parallel in today’s world of which we, as Christians, need to be aware. The liberal, elitist thinkers, so entrenched in America’s mainstream, are potentially dangerous to us. They have no rational basis for their hatred of all things Christian and so it is a small step for them to lapse into violence. Most dangerous are the environmentalist and animal-rights movements that, more than any other part of American society, have lapsed into “Creation worship” (see Romans 1). Only the rule of law and the protections of the Constitution (which, of course, are based on Judeo-Christian concepts of law) have held them back and those protections have been steadily eroding. It is for this reason we must heed 1 Tim 2:1,2 seeking God for righteous government “…that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life…”.
